Our goal is to make the manufacturing industry a safer place to work by creating a culture of safety where every worker safely returns home to his/her family each night. The Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC (“the Alliance”) was established to reduce injuries in the industry. We serve a demographic of over 3000 manufacturers in BC and employ a professional team of health & safety specialists to support our members. We deliver a range of occupational health & safety advisory services, resources, training, and provide the Occupational Safety Standard of Excellence (OSSE) program for the manufacturing industry. We are a not-for-profit industry organization passionate about what we do and how we impact people every day. Job Summary

Reporting the CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) oversees the overall operations and contributes to the delivery of our strategic plan. The COO works collaboratively with the CEO, department managers, and external stakeholders to achieve the Alliance’s strategic objectives and our mandate to reduce and eliminate injuries in the manufacturing sector.

Working closely with the CEO, Executive team and departmental managers, the COO will ensure that safe and effective day-to-day operations of the organization are maintained. The COO is expected to act independently, making timely and at times, significant decisions to ensure efficient and effective operational delivery, driving change and improvement by supporting and influencing both the relevant stakeholders and corporate teams.

The COO is responsible for troubleshooting and leading operational planning for successful execution of key performance indicators. The COO is also responsible for all aspects of operations, including marketing, stakeholder relations, OHS services, and program and resource development in areas impacted by key performance.

The role will also oversee the delivery of ongoing training development activities, OHS programs including the OSSE program, specialized services, resource development and training, service engagements and new membership development and active engagement.

Overview of the Chief Operating Officer Role

  • Monitors and manages the engagement activities, health & safety services, programs, training and development of the organization, including allocating efficient use of the company’s resources.
  • Evaluates the performance of marketing, stakeholder engagement, health & safety services, research, resources, training and development departments to provide organizational core requirements
  • Conduct the Alliance’s activity in accordance with short or long term strategic planning; participate in executive management and relevant internal and external stakeholder meetings, offering suggestions and solutions to improve the company’s policies
  • Report on a regular basis to the CEO with whom he/she will collaborate in finding the best solutions and strategies for the company’s future
  • Verify effective use of management skills and knowledge, as well as of good understanding of the industry and business to deliver on the KPIs of the organization
  • Write and submit reports to the CEO in all matters of importance

  • Lead and contribute to short and long-term organizational planning and strategy as a member of the Executive team

Collaboration and Facilitation, Teamwork, Conflict Resolution

  • Collaborate with department leaders in working together to achieve organizational mission
  • Act as Chair for committees
  • Oversee the building of the management team and departments to grow and diversify the skills within the department
  • Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills for internal and external organizational functions
  • Foster creativity among staff to develop programs and resources

Financial Management and Business Acumen

  • Support annual budgeting and (business and strategic) planning process
  • Oversee monthly and quarterly assessments and forecasts of organization’s financial performance against budget, financial and operational goals. Oversee short and long-term financial and managerial reporting
  • Support current and projected growth forecasts to support the Alliance
  • Identify strategies to support financial revenue streams that provide value to members
  • Develop long-range forecasts and maintain long-range financial plans related to the department and participate with the Executive team in developing organizational forecasts

Organizational and Operational Effectiveness, Strategic Agility, Strategy, Complex Problem Solving

  • Responsible for supporting a positive culture, process, structure, and people within and among the departmental teams and Executives
  • Scan the environment for high-impact, high-leverage improvement and cross-functional collaboration opportunities
  • Benchmark the organization’s current activities, performance and investment against industry best practices, and through gap analysis, develop a roadmap for improvements and business case for undertaking necessary changes
  • Oversee the identification, recommendation and implementation of these opportunities, including directing cross-functional implementation teams, in an effort to increase overall effectiveness of membership engagement for the organization
  • Direct organization-wide efforts to effectively manage and allocate assigned resources within the department—money and people
  • Continue to build strong, effective departments that meets the Alliance goals and objectives
  • Drive initiatives in the management team and organizationally that contribute to long-term operational excellence
  • Advise on matters related to supporting long term vision and sustainability

Program Management

  • Oversee operational efficiency and effectiveness of the projects in the departments
  • Direct the operational and administrative activities for the support activities
  • Prepare analysis and related reports with supporting data for the CEO as required
  • Ensure effective information flow to and from the executive office
  • Facilitate the cooperation of the internal teams in meetings and discussions, ensuring the groups are working on the right things, in the right amounts, at the right times
  • Provide oversight and guidance to projects of high importance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, economics, or related business field with a minimum of 8 years of experience and demonstrated competence in a similar role
  • Experienced COO with 5-10 years performing role in a variety of economic conditions
  • COO with demonstrated capability of supporting a fast growing organization
  • OHS education, knowledge and 5-8 years experience, with demonstrated commitment to health & safety; formal education in Occupational Health & Safety an asset
  • Strong networking capability in senior executive management environment with demonstrated experience
  • Knowledge of government and WorkSafeBC policy
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, database programs and related software
  • Demonstrated experience using CRM systems and interpreting trends
  • Experienced communications skills, both verbal and written (corporate) including public relations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated competence in advocacy and debating issues of importance to the organizational mandate
  • Experience working in the manufacturing industry
