Our goal is to make the Manufacturing Industry a safer place to work by creating a culture of safety wherein every worker safely returns home to his/her family each night. The Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC (“the Alliance”) was established to reduce injuries in the industry. We serve a demographic of over 3000 manufacturers in BC and employ a professional team of health & safety specialists to support our members. We deliver a range of occupational health & safety advisory services, resources, training, and provide the Occupational Safety Standard Program for the manufacturing industry in BC.  We are a not-for-profit industry organization passionate about what we do and how we impact people every day. Job Summary

The Chief Projects Officer (CPO) is responsible for securing, leading and executing projects impacting the manufacturing industry; and identifying potential research opportunities to further strengthen the Alliance’s goal in making the manufacturing industry in BC a safer place to work. The CPO will work closely with the Senior Executive team in developing budgets and strategy to complete the projects while recognizing the important interrelated business department relationships.

The CPO is key to ensuring the Alliance achieves its business objectives internally and externally, growing the organization’s impact and reputation and ensuring its future success. As the “Voice of Projects” helps to shape a project-friendly culture and improve the performance of projects, programs and portfolios aligned with the organization´s overall strategy.

This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer, and is responsible for all staff and contractors directly recruited to support the project.

Key Results Areas:

  • Understanding the dynamics and sensitivities of strategic issues impacting the manufacturing industry
  • Liaising with relevant stakeholders at the executive level to discuss strategic potential opportunities that impact current and potential projects and its current or future impact on the manufacturing industry
  • Maintaining a full understanding of the business plan and service objectives of the Alliance
  • Leading and executing critical projects influencing and impacting the manufacturing industry
  • Identifying potential challenges in the manufacturing sector, and researching, developing new and innovative solutions consistent with the business strategy
  • Consulting with stakeholders on various research projects to solicit input and expertise on specific issues
  • Defining the project management strategy and related objectives for the Alliance; and monitoring progress
  • Seeking strategically significant projects; liaising with appropriate stakeholders for funding or sponsorship opportunities
  • Identifying and securing project funding to support initiative

Establishment of effective working relationships (internal and external):

Work with the CEO and Executive Team to establish and develop influential relationships with stakeholders directly or indirectly impacted by project scope. This may include:

  • Project Stakeholders and Association Partners
  • Sponsors and related funding partners
  • Alliance members
  • Professional bodies for the member professions and related designations – CRSP, CHRP, CPA
  • Other professional consultants when required, in consultation with the CEO
  • Statutory and regulatory bodies related to OHS
  • Focus on achieving strategic business objectives through projects, programs and portfolios

  • Ensure key projects and programs support the right business goals
  • Balance risks with rewards
  • Link projects with the business strategy
  • Drive efficiencies and linkages between projects
  • Manage resource requirements across the portfolio of projects
  • Make sure each project has an effective leader/project manager
  • Implement or oversee appropriate project management methodology
  • Oversee and manage changes to project scope
  • Strive toward achieving execution excellence

Key Competencies:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, economics, or related business field with a minimum of 8 years of experience and demonstrated competence in a similar role
  • Master’s degree in a related health & safety field or equivalent combination of qualifications and experience
  • Certified project management designation or equivalent related experience
  • Strong networking capability in senior executive management environment with demonstrated experience
  • Knowledge of government and WorkSafeBC policy
  • Demonstrated capacity in working with educational institutions and related associations with provincial, national and international scope
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, database programs and related software, social media tools and applied experience of progressive business practices
  • Experience working in the Manufacturing Industry
  • Formal education in occupational health & safety is an asset
