The Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC (“the Alliance”) was established to reduce injuries in the industry. We serve a demographic of over 3000 manufacturers in BC and employ a professional team of health & safety specialists to support our members. We deliver a range of occupational health & safety advisory services, resources, training, and provide the Occupational Safety Standard Program for the manufacturing industry in BC. We are a not-for-profit industry organization passionate about what we do and how we impact people every day. Job Summary

The Research Associate is responsible for leading research in key projects impacting the manufacturing industry aligned with the Alliance’s goal of making the manufacturing industry a safer place to work.

The role provides the opportunity to learn continuously and develop professionally while experiencing the application of research results through practical implementation in a variety of formats to affect real change. The role opens the door to developing relationships with professionals and other researchers to expand your academia.

This position reports to the Chief Projects Officer (CPO) and responsible for leading research efforts to support the CPO in growing the Alliance’s impact and reputation.

Key Results Areas:

  • Complete the research design and field studies in relation to the project
  • Conduct individual and collaborative research projects. Lead project implementation and execution
  • Conduct research and collect data through complex techniques and procedures, library research, structured interviews or other project specific methodology
  • Carry out fieldwork in consultation with the CPO and the Project Coordinator
  • Schedule, organize and report on status of research activities. Plan and modify research techniques, procedures, tests, equipment or software management
  • Interpret, synthesize and analyze data
  • Project management: prepare a timetable and meet project milestones; participate in regular discussions with other partners; liaise with subject matter experts and advisory bodies to enhance impact of research
  • Participate regularly in group meetings and prepare and deliver presentations to project team, internal and external stakeholders
  • Write up results of research, and contribute to publishing of results in high-quality peer-reviewed literature
  • Contribute to the preparation and drafting of research bids and proposals

Qualifications:

Essential

  • Undergraduate degree with a focus on social sciences/research with at least 2 years’ experience in a research position
  • Efficient and competent writing capabilities
  • Detail oriented with solid analytical skills and ability to synthesize data points into trends
  • Energetic, self-motivated and an ability to perform under pressure and meet time sensitive deadlines, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Process oriented with the ability to learn quickly on the job
  • Demonstrated passion for occupational health and safety and the Alliance mandate
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, database programs and related software, and social media tools with an ability to quickly learn and adapt to new platforms

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in social sciences and/or occupational health and safety and/or business administration
  • Project management designation and demonstrated experience
  • Manufacturing industry experience
  • Occupational health & safety education, skills or experience
