The Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) is one of the most important mechanisms organizations have to improve safety, learn about work and improve how work gets done. Most committees genuinely want to prevent harm and support the organization as well as their colleagues. Yet many JHSCs find themselves spending a lot of their time reviewing incidents, tracking injury statistics, and ensuring programs and procedures are in place.

While these activities matter, they often keep the committee focused on reacting to problems.

Our short course is one-of-a-kind, exploring how JHSCs can evolve to be a proactive learning forum that helps organizations understand work as it really happens and strengthen the systems that support safe and effective performance.

Participants will explore how most JHSCs traditionally operate, why those approaches can unintentionally limit learning, and what needs to shift to unlock the committee’s full potential. This is not about abandoning compliance requirements—those remain important. Instead, the course shows how organizations can build on compliance by adding learning, curiosity, and deeper understanding of everyday work.

Participants will learn:

  • how traditional inspections can shift from silent audits into curious conversations with the people who do the work, helping committees better understand real conditions on the front line.
  • how the JHSC can move beyond relying solely on lagging indicators such as injury statistics by incorporating leading indicators that reveal opportunities for improvement before harm occurs.
  • how a JHSC can become a powerful engine for learning, improvement, and operational excellence—helping organizations protect people while strengthening performance.
