Conifex relied upon lockout as a safeguard in operational and maintenance activities in and around the planer equipment. Safeguarding around the planer system was a balance of safe operating procedure and some point of operation fixed guarding around rotating hazards. This approach has historically been the norm within the industry. Utilizing lockout in this fashion can increases the risk of injury due to complexity of lockout, motivation to circumvent procedure, frequency of non-safe failure of energy isolating devices, and long run-on times of rotating hazards.

The results of the project are as follows:

  1. Significant enhancement in safety for production
  2. Reduction of per occurrence planer entry time from 80 seconds to 20 sections
  3. Overall downtime reduction of 50%
  4. Legislative compliance (system is verified and validated) The purpose of this presentation is to explain the project phases, methodologies, challenges, and process during this project.
