Psychological First Aid

This Psychological First Aid course is an 8-hour session that teaches learners how to provide practical, compassionate support without being intrusive. They will learn how to assess needs and concerns, help people connect with accurate information and available services, and strengthen access to social supports. Other topics covered include core communication skills, including how to listen without pressuring someone to talk and how to promote a sense of safety and connection.

Goals and Objectives

Provide learns with practical skills to assess and respond to people experiencing mental health challenges.

Learners will leave the course with a better understanding of how to:

  • Provide practical, compassionate support without being intrusive
  • Assess needs and concerns
  • Help people connect with accurate information and available services
  • Strengthen access to social supports
  • Use core communication skills to promote a sense of safety and connection, including how to listen without pressuring someone to talk

This course is intended for anyone who wants to

  • Employees from any industry
  • Occupational health and safety professionals from any industry

Course Length and Format

This instructor-led course is only offered in-person in an 8-hour session. This course may be scheduled to run privately at your workplace for your team members.

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required.

Course Evaluation

There are two requirements to successfully complete this course and receive a Certificate of Completion:

  • Fully attend the class
  • Complete the written assessment (quiz)

Your training costs may be eligible for partial reimbursement through the B.C. Employer Training Grant. Find out here.

Eligible toward the requirements for Joint Health and Safety Committee training for new members or annual training in British Columbia; may be eligible in other jurisdictions as well.
