Counterbalanced Forklift Operator Training

Counterbalanced Forklift Operator Training is a course that provides knowledge and skills to qualify individuals as forklift operators in compliance with the guidelines and training standards determined by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). 

This is a virtual e-Learning course with a practical assessment to be scheduled and completed.

Goals and Objectives

By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Explain the forklift legal requirements found in the Workers Compensation Act (WCA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR) and describe why forklift training is necessary
  • Recognize elements of a forklift safety program, describe the classes, the parts, and applications of forklifts
  • Explain the forklift principles of balance and stability, describe the principles of facility layout, traffic flow, aisle clearances, noise control, and ergonomic design to optimize forklift operations while promoting safety and operator health
  • Explain the procedure for performing a pre-use inspection
  • Explain the common practices for operating a forklift
  • Explain the procedures for load handling including stacking and de-stacking and placing loads in and out of storage racking
  • Identify the different types of attachments that can be used with a forklift and the process for lifting personnel in a work platform
  • Explain the procedures and safety requirements when refueling internal combustion engines and recharging batteries on electric forklifts
  • Be prepared to operate the forklift demonstrating the safety procedures outlined in the course

Audience

This course is required for workers who operate a counterbalanced forklift in their workplace.

Course Length and Format

The eLearning course is structured using self-paced online components including various practical learning activities in each module. Modules are supported with various resources and examples. It is estimated to take 3 hours to complete the training.

Upon completion of the online training, participants must schedule and complete a practical assessment (approximately 1-2 hours).

We recommend completing the course in one sitting, but may be completed in multiple sittings as course progress is tracked in this self-paced course format. Participants are able to continue where they left off.

Participants must have access to a laptop/desktop computer or iPad/tablet to attend the training sessions.  A good internet or WIFI connection is essential.

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required.

Course Evaluation

There is a 1-2 hour practical assessment for this course. Upon successful completion of all course modules and the practical assessment, learners will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Learners will need to complete all 2 course elements (Learning Component and Post-course assessment) to be able to download their certificate of completion.

Eligible toward the requirements for Joint Health and Safety Committee training for new members or annual training in British Columbia; may be eligible in other jurisdictions as well.
