WHMIS Education

Do you know about the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)? If your workplace has hazardous products—like chemicals—then you will need to complete WHMIS training and education as per the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR) 5.6 & 5.7.  

WHMIS training and education ensures that workers know are aware of how safe use, handling, storage and disposal of these materials in the workplace is communicated. This course is designed in consideration of WorkSafeBC regulatory requirements for training new members and are relevant to all BC industries. 

  • The goal of this course is to provide the learner with an overview of the WHMIS system, including legislation, hazards, pictograms, labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and WHMIS program requirements. 
  • The purpose of the WHMIS Education eLearning course is to introduce the basic elements (hazard classification, safety data sheets, labels) of a WHMIS program to workers who are involved with the use, storage, and handling of chemicals in the workplace.  

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required. 

Course Length and Format

This course is offered in two different formats, as an in-person classroom course and as an online eLearning course.

In-Person Classroom Training:

  • Instructor-led course
  • Can be offered privately or publicly
  • Estimated to be approximately 2 hours
  • It is helpful if participants have access to a personal or work cellphone that they can connect to Wi-Fi and use to participate in activities 

eLearning Course:

  • Self-Directed
  • Estimated to take approximately 1 hour to complete
  • Ideally to be completed in one sitting, but it does track your progress
  • This course will require basic computer skills and access (keyboard, mouse, Internet)

 

 

Goals and Objectives

By the end of this course, the participant will have knowledge to:

  • Identify the purpose and elements of WHMIS
  • Recognize roles and responsibilities
  • Analyze legislation related to WHMIS 
  • Distinguish hazard classes and pictograms to determine the severity or nature of hazardous products 
  • Recognize the required components of supplier and workplace labels 
  • Identify the 16 sections of the SDS to appraise its importance in ensuring the health and safety of workers  
  • Identify employer and worker’s roles in the implementation of a WHMIS program

Audience

This course is intended to reach a wide audience—both workers and those in leadership roles—including frontline workers, supervisors, and managers in any industry. This course is a requirement for all employers and workers who have hazardous products used, stored, or handled at their workplace as per Occupational Health and Safety Regulation section 5.3.

Assessment and Completion

In-Person Classroom Training:

  • A quiz will be administered at the end of the course for knowledge acquisition and completion purposes.
  • Upon successful completion of all course lessons and quiz, learners will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

eLearning Course:

  • Students will need to complete all 2 course elements (Learning Component and Quiz) to be able to download their Certificate of Completion.

Eligible toward the requirements for Joint Health and Safety Committee training for new members or annual training in British Columbia; may be eligible in other jurisdictions as well.
