Working Alone or In Isolation

In some workplaces, there will be times when workers will be working alone or in isolation. This course offers training on the risks associated with working alone and the best practices to protect lone workers in various types of scenarios. Using current legislation and OHS responsibilities as a guide, this course provides best practices that can be implemented to protect lone workers in various working alone scenarios. 

Goals and Objectives

By the end of this course, the participants should be able to: 

  • Provide general definitions of working alone and working in isolation 
  • List examples of lone work situations
  • Recognize the Canadian legal and OHS responsibilities assigned to employers with lone workers   
  • Recognize the occupational health and safety hazards associated with working in isolation 
  • Identify hazards associated to working alone or in isolation 
  • Recognize the steps of the risk assessment process 
  • Identify main types of control measures 
  • List the main components of a working alone or in isolation program

Course Length and Format

The eLearning course is structured using self-paced online components including various practical learning activities in each module. Modules are supported with various resources and examples. It is estimated to take approximately 2 hours to complete the training. We recommend completing the course in one sitting, but it does not need to be, as your progress will be tracked throughout.

Participants must have access to a laptop/desktop computer or iPad/tablet to attend the training sessions.  A good internet or WIFI connection is essential.

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required.

Course Evaluation

There is a written assessment for this course. Upon successful completion of all course modules and the written assessment, learners will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Learners will need to complete all 2 course elements (Learning Component and Post-course assessment) to be able to download their certificate of completion.
