Ergonomics 101

Ergonomics is concerned with the “fit” between the user, equipment and environment. Ergonomics takes into account users’ capabilities and limitations to ensure tasks, functions, information and the environment suit each user. This course provides information to managers, supervisors and employees. on proper ergonomic design to prevent repetitive strain injuries and other musculoskeletal disorders.

The goal of the Ergonomic 101 course is to provide an introductory understanding of the principles and application of ergonomic concepts and principles in the workplace. This course is designed for workers who seek to enhance their understanding of ergonomics to improve workplace comfort, safety, and efficiency.

This course is intended for front line workers as an introduction to understanding workplace ergonomics. It can be extended as a preliminary course for managers, supervisors and JHSC members or safety committee members in the manufacturing sector.

Ergonomics 101 is provided in three learning formats:

  • Online eLearning
  • Virtually Instructor-Led, and
  • In-person Instructor-Led in Classroom

Ergonomics 101 can also be scheduled as a private training to happen on-site at your organization.

Goals and Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will understand and be able to:

  • Apply basic ergonomic principles and concepts
  • Practice the legal responsibilities of employers and employees regarding compliance with MSI-related regulations
  • Detect early signs and symptoms of common ergonomic risk factors, including related injuries such as MSDs and MSIs
  • Establish control measures to reduce the risk of injury and MSI prevention

Course Length and Format

The eLearning course is structured using self-paced online components including various practical learning activities in each module. Modules are supported with various resources and samples. It is estimated to require 2 hours to complete the training.

Participants must have access to a laptop/desktop computer or iPad/tablet to attend the training sessions.  A good internet or WIFI connection is essential.

Virtual Instructor-Led training is taught virtually through Zoom by an MSABC instructor and the training takes place in one 4 hour session.

Instructor-Led Classroom courses are taught in-person by an MSABC instructor and the training takes place in one 4 hour session.

This session can be scheduled as a private training.

It is recommended that participants bring cellphones to the training to participate in classroom activities.

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required.

Course Evaluation

There is a written assessment for this course. Upon successful completion of all course modules and the written assessment, learners scoring 70% and over in the written assessment will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Training Resources

For in-person Instructor-Led Classroom trainings, a Participant Guide will be provided in print to all enrolled participants.

Virtual Instructor-Led course participants will be provided a link to download an electronic version of the Participant Guide.
