Occupational Hygiene – Getting Started
This is an awareness-level course that helps you anticipate, identify, evaluate, and control occupational hygiene-related workplace hazards to assist in preventing employee illness and injury. It will help you understand your responsibilities under health and safety legislation, including due diligence, hazard prevention, workplace inspections, and incident investigation. This course will also raise awareness on when to engage an occupational hygienist.
Goals and Objectives
By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Describe what occupational hygiene is and why it’s important in the workplace
- Show an understanding of key occupational hygiene concepts and common hazards in the workplace
- List some common types of hazards and risks in the workplace
- Recognize noise hazards and controls in the workplace
- Recognize airborne particulate hazards and controls in the workplace
- Recognize metalwork hazards and controls in the workplace
- Recognize chemical and gas hazards and controls in the workplace
- Recognize radiation and extreme temperature hazards and controls in the workplace

Course Length and Format
The eLearning course is structured using self-paced online components including various practical learning activities in each module. Modules are supported with various resources and examples. It is estimated to take 2 hours to complete the training. We recommend completing the course in one sitting, but it does not need to be, as your progress will be tracked throughout.
Participants must have access to a laptop/desktop computer or iPad/tablet to attend the training sessions. A good internet or WIFI connection is essential.
Pre-requisites
Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required.
Course Evaluation
There is a written assessment for this course. Upon successful completion of all course modules and the written assessment, learners will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Learners will need to complete all 2 course elements (Learning Component and Post-course assessment) to be able to download their certificate of completion.
