The 2023 recipient of the Daneen Skilling Scholarship in OHS Studies, Shayla’s professional background includes an opportunity to work at WorkSafeBC, where she first learned about illnesses that resulted from work-related asbestos exposure. This helped her understand the full effects that workplace injuries—which are mostly preventable— can have on an individual and their families.
Shayla has completed the first year of her master’s degree in occupational and environmental hygiene at UBC and is a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association.
She is dedicated to building a career in occupational hygiene and understands that a successful safety culture stems from building positive relationships with workers.
