Maureen Shaw

Maureen Shaw âretiredâ as President and CEO of The Industrial Accident Prevention Association (IAPA), headquartered in Toronto in 2010 and returned to her roots in Victoria. She has spent 40 years providing leadership in the evolution of health and safety at provincial, national and international levels. Maureen is a former Chair of the Council of Governors Canadian Centre for Health & Safety and Canadian Vice-Chair of the International Commission on Occupational Health. Â She is a thought leader, lecturer, and presenter in boardrooms, conferences, and in the education community.
A career-long advocate of effective leadership, Maureen was co-founder of the CEO leadership Charter in Ontario and in BC and has delivered keynote presentations globally on the subject. She is a pioneer in workplace mental health as a vital component of healthy workplaces and the key value of an environment that puts the total health of people first. She was an early supporter of the Global Business and Economic Roundtable and the Mental Health Commissionâs Workforce Advisory Committee, who were the impetus for the National Standard for Psychologically Safe Workplaces. Maureen was one of the founders of Threads of Life â Association for Workplace Tragedy Family Support and The Safe Communities Foundation of Canada.
Maureen is member of the Advisory Cabinet of Our Place Society, Radiation Safety Institute of Canada and the Editorial Board of OHS Canada. She is a founding member of the Board of the Executive Health and Safety Council of BC and an Advisor to the Manufacturers Safety Alliance of BC.
With her love of the arts, Maureen has served her community as Vice-Chair of The Canadian College of Performing Arts and completed a term as a member of the Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board, using her knowledge to help create a healthy & safe environment for those who serve us.
She has been recognized nationally and internationally for her leadership: one of 60 recipients of the Inaugural Queenâs Diamond Jubilee Medal; recognized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) for her “contribution and commitment to the worldwide advancement of occupational safety and healthâ; received the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Confederation, also referred to as the Canada 125 Medal; Calgary YWCA Woman of Distinction in Business, Labour, and the Professions Award, and the Canada Safety Council Service to Canada Award and was recently inducted into the OHS Canada Hall of Fame.
