Managing Difficult Conversations

With so many interactions happening throughout the day, it’s only natural that some will be challenging. Whether you’re having a conversation in person or leading a virtual team and need to connect with someone in a different location, there are strategies you can use to make these discussions go more smoothly. The purpose of this online course is to provide practical tools to help you manage difficult conversations effectively and achieve the best possible outcomes.

Goals and Objectives

By the end of this course, the learners should:

  • Define and understand what a frame of reference is and its role in conversations
  • Establish positive intent and desired outcomes
  • Recognize effective communication skills in difficult conversations
  • Implement steps to manage difficult conversations
  • Prepare for important conversations by utilizing body language

This course is intended to reach a wide audience including managers, supervisors and JHSC members or safety committee members in any industry sector.

Course Length and Format

The eLearning course is structured using self-paced online components including various learning activities in each module. Modules are supported with resources and examples. It is estimated to take 1.5 hours to complete the training. We recommend completing the course in one sitting, but it does not need to be, as your progress will be tracked throughout.

Participants must have access to a laptop/desktop computer or iPad/tablet to attend the training sessions. A good internet or WIFI connection is essential.

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required.

Course Evaluation

There is a written assessment for this course. Upon successful completion of all course modules and the written assessment, learners will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Learners will need to complete all course elements (Learning Component and Post-course assessment) to be able to download their certificate of completion.
