The ABC’s of Managing Others

Supervisors play a vital role in guiding teams, managing performance, and fostering a positive work environment. This course explores key topics such as transitioning into a supervisory role, setting goals, communicating clearly, giving feedback, and handling conflict.

The purpose of this online course is to support new and aspiring supervisors in developing the foundational skills needed to lead others effectively in the workplace. By applying practical tools and strategies, supervisors will be better equipped to support their teams, make confident decisions, and contribute to a productive and respectful workplace.

Goals and Objectives

By the end of this course, the learners should:

  • Identify key shifts in responsibilities when transitioning into a supervisory role
  • Recognize strategies to gain respect, establish authority, and build trust as a new supervisor
  • Describe the impact of positive and negative environmental cues on leadership behaviours
  • Apply goal-setting strategies using the SPIRIT framework
  • Apply time management and prioritization methods to enhance productivity
  • Demonstrate effective listening techniques to improve communication
  • Differentiate between questioning methods to gather meaningful information
  • Apply strategies for giving feedback that supports employee growth
  • Explain how to give clear and effective instructions using various learning styles
  • Distinguish between orders, requests, and suggestions and when to use each
  • Apply a structured approach to resolving workplace conflict
  • Use a step-by-step process to handle difficult conversations constructively
  • Identify ways to establish credibility and develop effective workplace relationships
  • Create a personal action plan for continuous improvement as a supervisor

This course is intended to reach a wide audience including managers and supervisors in any industry sector, especially those who are new to a supervisory role.

Course Length and Format

The eLearning course is structured using self-paced online components including various learning activities in each module. Modules are supported with resources and examples. It is estimated to take 2 hours to complete the training. We recommend completing the course in one sitting, but it does not need to be, as your progress will be tracked throughout.

Participants must have access to a laptop/desktop computer or iPad/tablet to attend the training sessions. A good internet or WIFI connection is essential.

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required.

Course Evaluation

There is a written assessment for this course. Upon successful completion of all course modules and the written assessment, learners will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Learners will need to complete all course elements (Learning Component and Post-course assessment) to be able to download their certificate of completion.
