Disability Awareness: Working with People with Disabilities

Creating an inclusive working environment and workplace is essential for fostering innovation, improving team dynamics, and addressing the evolving needs of today’s workforce. By understanding the challenges faced by people with disabilities and recognizing their unique contributions, learners will gain the skills to support a more diverse and equitable environment.

This online course was developed to raise awareness and provide practical strategies to work effectively with people with disabilities. 

Goals and Objectives

By the end of this course, the learner should be able to: 

  • Identify key concepts related to disabilities to promote inclusivity 
  • Differentiate between myths and facts about disabilities to challenge biases 
  • Recognize the impact of inclusive language and behaviour on communication 
  • Analyze barriers to accessibility and propose solutions for inclusion 
  • Evaluate inclusive practices and their role in organizational success 
  • Apply critical thinking to address inappropriate behaviours in diverse scenarios 
  • Develop a personal action plan to foster inclusivity and accessibility

Audience

This course is intended to reach a wide audience in the manufacturing sector, including:

  • Managers
  • Supervisors
  • HR professionals, and
  • Joint Health and Safety Committee members

Course Length and Format

The eLearning course is structured using self-paced online components including various practical learning activities in each module. Modules are supported with various resources and examples. It is estimated to take 1.5 hours to complete the training. We recommend completing the course in one sitting, but it does not need to be, as your progress will be tracked and saved.

Participants must have access to a laptop/desktop computer or iPad/tablet to attend the training sessions.  A good internet or WIFI connection is essential.

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required.

Course Evaluation

There is a written assessment for this course. Upon successful completion of all course modules and the written assessment, learners will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Learners will need to complete all two (2) course elements (Learning Component and Post-course assessment/Quiz) to be able to download their certificate of completion.
