Personal Protective Equipment: Risk Assessment and Selection

This awareness-level course will help you assess potential hazards that will require the use of PPE in the workplace. It will help you understand how to select the appropriate type of equipment to protect workers’ health and safety.  

Please note that this course does not cover the step-by-step risk assessment process. If you need to review the fundamentals of hazard identification and risk assessment, we recommend that you complete our Hazard Identification and Control course prior to completing this course. 

Goals and Objectives

By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Recall how a risk assessment is done 
  • Explain the importance of conducting a risk assessment before selecting PPE 
  • Describe the general guidelines for selecting PPE 
  • Identify the potential hazards that pose a risk of injury to a worker in the work environment 
  • Select the appropriate type of PPE

Audience

This course is for supervisors and employers of small to large workplaces—particularly in the manufacturing sectoras well as Joint Health and Safety Committee members and OHS practitioners.

Course Length and Format

The eLearning course is structured using self-paced online components including various practical learning activities in each module. Modules are supported with various resources and examples. It is estimated to take 1.5 hours to complete the training. We recommend completing the course in one sitting, but it does not need to be, as your progress will be tracked throughout.

Participants must have access to a laptop/desktop computer or iPad/tablet to attend the training sessions.  A good internet or WIFI connection is essential.

Pre-requisites

Previous health and safety education and/or experience is an asset but not required. Completion of Hazard Identification and Control training is strongly recommended.

Course Evaluation

There is a written assessment for this course. Upon successful completion of all course modules and the written assessment, learners will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Learners will need to complete all 2 course elements (Learning Component and Post-course assessment) to be able to download their certificate of completion.
