701: Demonstrate understanding of legislation, regulations and standards for OHS

OHS professionals must be able to interpret and comply with laws, legislation, regulations and standards that govern their organizations’ operations. Legislation can sometimes be insufficient to meet the demands of the risk profile. In such cases, OHS professionals must consider the spirit and intent of the law and apply good practice and OHS judgement to reduce risk. In order to act as an effective resource in their organization, an OHS professional should be able to:

– Understand how local legislation and regulations apply to a workplace
– Use tools and techniques for evaluating compliance with legislation, regulations and standards
– Analyze a workplace for legislative and regulatory compliance and provide recommendations for corrective action
– Implement compliance and enforcement policies and strategies
