Leaders Need to Understand Workplace Mental Health
Jean Fong2024-12-13T04:29:26-08:00Workplace mental health isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s a cornerstone of organizational sustainability. When employees feel supported, they’re more engaged, productive, and resilient. But beyond the business case or proven ROI’s, there’s an even more important reason to focus on mental health: it’s simply the right thing to do. Leadership isn’t just about achieving results; it’s about taking care of the people who make those results possible.
Most people leaders have never been trained in mental health which can lead to uncertainty and hesitation about what to do to support employees. Some worry about making things worse. This is completely understandable. So how can leaders start? First, it begins with education. People leaders need to access training to understand the basics of mental health and how to recognize when someone might be struggling. Reducing stigma is another essential step. We need to talk about mental health as openly as we do physical health, fostering an environment where conversations are normalized and safe.
It’s also about paying attention to your people—really noticing when someone’s behaviour or energy seems off—and responding with empathy when they do open up. Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do as a leader is to listen, acknowledge their experience, and avoid rushing to solutions.
Finally, make sure you have resources available, like Employee and Family Assistance Programs (EAFAP) or access to community mental health services. When employees know there’s help available, it creates a foundation of trust and reassurance. It also provides people leaders with greater confidence that they can be helpful in an appropriate way.
When leaders prioritize mental health, they’re not just improving organizational outcomes—they’re creating workplaces where people feel safe, valued and supported. And in the end, that’s what effective leadership is all about.
