Controller

The Controller oversees and manages the accounting operations of the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC, including the production of periodic financial reports, providing advice towards improving reported financial results, the maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk. The controller is accountable for Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Audit Compliance, and Financial Reporting to the regulatory boards and Board of Directors.

Applicants must have proven success in managing accounts, collaborating among departments, planning, project management, and budget development and management. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential for this position.

What Youā€™ll Be Doing

Key Activities and Responsibilities

Management

  • Ensure the accuracy and productivity of the day-to-day operations within the controllerā€™s departments, including invoicing, collections/deposits, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit checks, payroll, etc.
  • Assure financial goals and objectives for the departments are aligned with the organizationā€™s short and longā€ term goals and objectives.
  • Maintain banking and financing relationships to ensure competitive plans are utilized in accordance with organizational goals and strategies.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources to evaluate current and potential benefits for the staff that align with MSABC values
  • Support annual budgeting and (business and strategic) planning process
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies. Maintain/work towards professional body certifications

Day to Day Activities

  • Analyze vendors, such as insurance companies and other service providers or institutions, to ensure competitive pricing/service.
  • Ensure that accounts payables are accurate and paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that accounts receivables are collected promptly
  • Ensure that credit is extended after proper credit screening procedures are performed
  • Ensure the bank reconciliations are completed monthly
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain and develop a system of controls for accounting transactions

Reporting

  • Assure accurate and timely financial statements
  • Ensure information is properly accounted for by the 10th of the following month.
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of operations
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics for all departments of MSABC
  • Develop and manage the production of the annual budgets and forecasts
  • Coordinate and provide accurate information and forecasts at quarterly Board of Director meeting

Compliance

  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual financial audit
  • Monitor funding levels and compliance with Regulatory Board guidelines and covenants
  • Comply with local, provincial, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings

Additional Accountabilities

  • Provide financial analysis on special projects, project costing, capital expenditures, etc. when necessary
  • In cooperation with the CEO and Board of Directors, uphold MSABCā€™s vision, mission, values and ensure implementation throughout the organization
  • Provide supervision on requests for proposals, compliance, annual funding, and reporting to the regulatory board, addressing and resolving errors, changes or oversights.
  • Support information technology related items including capital assets, contracts and obligations, compliance and security
  • Other duties as necessary

Location and Travel

  • Based in the Fraser Valley, this position supports a hybrid of remote and office-based work

Salary Range

  • $100,000 – $130,000, based on a combination of education and experience

Who You Are

You bring relevant experience and education to the position, including:

  • Bachelorā€™s degree in accounting and 5 – 7 years of related experience
  • Advanced fluency in Microsoft Office 365 suite of products (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Dynamics/CRM, SharePoint etc.)
  • Strong IT knowledge and skills
  • Advanced working knowledge and experience in cloud-based accounting systems (QBO)
  • GAAP knowledge, CPA highly preferred
  • Strong written, verbal and collaboration skills
  • Ability to solve complex problems, engage alternate viewpoints and make effective decisions
