Dr. Michael Schwandt is a Medical Health Officer with Vancouver Coastal Health, and Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Population and Public Health. He is a specialist in Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Dr. Schwandt’s major research and practice areas include environmental public health, global health and health equity. Recent research topics have explored links between urban form and health outcomes, with attention to active transportation, public space and disparities in health. He is actively engaged at the front lines of British Columbia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Schwandt enjoys working across disciplines and methodologies, and has been a principal investigator and co-investigator on several nationally and provincially funded projects, currently including the inter-provincial Multisectoral Urban Systems for Health and Equity in Canadian Cities program. Dr. Schwandt is committed to addressing social determinants of health, and is a former board member of Canadian Doctors for Medicare and Upstream Institute for a Healthy Society.
