Safety Excellence Awards

The Safety Excellence Awards recognize BC manufacturing and food processing businesses for innovation and excellence in manufacturing safety. In 2022, 29 companies and individuals competed for these prestigious awards—people and organizations whose dedication to the health and safety of their people and communities is both commendable and inspiring.

2023 Award Nominations are now open!

Eligibility: Awarded to the Joint Health & Safety Committee at any member or OSSE certified organization.

Criteria: Applicant must submit a completed WorkSafeBC Joint Health & Safety Evaluation Tool and a nomination form submission detailing how their JHSC has excelled as a team to impact the workplace.

Nominators are encouraged to submit supporting materials such as a sample of recent committee minutes or a video if available. Nominators may also be asked to supply additional supporting information, such as WorkSafeBC data for the past 1 to 3 years, to support the judging process. Companies that have experienced a serious injury or fatality in the past two years may be excluded from consideration at the judges’ discretion.

Nominations: Any member company may submit a nomination for this award.

Judging: Winner is selected based on team performance in safety advocacy and workplace impact by a committee nominated by the Alliance.

Award: Winner and finalists for the award will be announced at the Safety Pinnacle Gala in June 2023. Winner will be awarded a trophy, and  interviewed and recognized in an Alliance publication. Winner may also be engaged to participate in media and promotional opportunities to profile their brand’s commitment to health and safety.

Eligibility: Award to a member or OSSE-certified organization with fewer than 20 FTE employees.

Criteria: The applicant must submit a nomination form detailing how their organization has excelled and had an impact on the workplace. 

Nominators are encouraged to submit supporting materials such as a sample of recent JHSC committee minutes or a video if available. Nominators may also be asked to supply additional supporting information, such as WorkSafeBC data for the past 1 to 3 years, to support the judging process. Companies that have experienced a serious injury or fatality in the past two years may be excluded from consideration at the judges’ discretion.

Nominations: Any member company with fewer than 20 FTE may submit a nomination for this award.

Judging: Winner is selected based on performance in safety advocacy and workplace impact by a committee nominated by the Alliance.

Award: Winner and finalists for the award will be announced at the Safety Pinnacle Gala in June 2023. Winner will be awarded a trophy, and interviewed and recognized in an Alliance publication. Winner may also be engaged to participate in media and promotional opportunities to profile their brand’s commitment to health and safety.

Eligibility: Any member or OSSE-certified organization.

Criteria: This award recognizes a company for innovation in safety. Based on innovation in any or all of these areas: OHS management systems, health & safety training, wellness programs, and culture. Nominations must demonstrate how the company’s safety innovation has demonstrated a positive impact on the workplace.

Nominators are encouraged to submit supporting materials such as a sample of recent committee minutes or a video if available. Nominators may also be asked to supply additional supporting information, such as WorkSafeBC data for the past 1 to 3 years, to support the judging process. Companies that have experienced a serious injury or fatality in the past two years may be excluded from consideration at the judges’ discretion.

Nominations: Companies may self-nominate or may be nominated by a supplier or partner. Company may submit supporting materials or video if they wish.

Judging: Judging by a committee appointed by the Alliance based on innovation in:

  • OHS management (10-point scale)
  • Health & safety training (10-point scale)
  • Wellness (10-point scale)
  • Culture (10-point scale)

Innovation that has shown the greatest impact on changing positive behaviors in the workplace will be awarded the highest points.

Award: Winner and finalists for the award will be announced at the Safety Pinnacle Awards Gala in June 2023. Winners may be awarded in up to four categories. Winner will be awarded a trophy, interviewed and recognized in an Alliance publication. Winner may also be engaged to participate in other media and promotional opportunities to showcase their brand leadership in health and safety.

Eligibility: Any member manufacturer or OSSE-certified company.

Criteria: This award recognizes a company for implementing leading solutions in three key manufacturing risk areas—in addition to demonstrating leadership in integrating health and safety into their business culture. Nominations must address the company’s programs related to:

  1. MSI prevention (ergonomics);
  2. Machine-related injuries (safeguarding and lockout);
  3. Slips, trips, and falls (housekeeping); AND
  4. Safety and business culture

Nominators are encouraged to submit supporting materials such as a sample of recent committee minutes or a video if available. Nominators may also be asked to supply additional supporting information, such as WorkSafeBC data for the past 1 to 3 years, to support the judging process. Companies that have experienced a serious injury or fatality in the past two years may be excluded from consideration at the judges’ discretion.

Nominations: Companies may self-nominate or may be nominated by a supplier or partner. Company may submit supporting materials or video if they wish. 

Judging: Judging by a committee appointed by the Alliance based on risk control in four areas:

Eligibility: Awarded to an individual in an Alliance member organization.

Criteria: The Apex Award recognizes an individual in a member organization for exceptional commitment, passion, dedication, and action in support of health and safety. Building an effective health and safety culture in organization takes a champion, and this award shines a light on one such individual for recognition.

Nominators are encouraged to submit supporting materials such as a sample of recent committee minutes or a video if available. Nominators may also be asked to supply additional supporting information, such as WorkSafeBC data for the past 1 to 3 years, to support the judging process. Companies that have experienced a serious injury or fatality in the past two years may be excluded from consideration at the judges’ discretion.

Nominations: Any member or OSSE-certified company may nominate an individual for this award. 

Judging: Winner is selected based on the award criteria by a committee nominated by the Alliance.

Award: The winner will be announced at the Safety Pinnacle Awards Gala in June 2023. The winner will be awarded a trophy and interviewed and recognized in an Alliance publication. The winner may also be engaged to participate in media and promotional opportunities to highlight their commitment (and their organization’s commitment) to health and safety.

NOMINATE AN INDIVIDUAL  

Eligibility: Awarded to a senior executive leader or business owner.

Criteria:

New in 2022, the Soaring Eagle Leadership Award is presented to a business owner or senior executive leader (your organization’s president, CEO, or senior executive in B.C.) who demonstrates exemplary and inspiring leadership that includes commitment to health and safety. For centuries, people have seen eagles as a symbol of courage, honour, pride, determination, and grace. While leaders face many challenges , how they tackle those challenges and support their teams define their leadership.

Nominators are encouraged to submit supporting materials such as a sample of recent committee minutes or a video if available. Nominators may also be asked to supply additional supporting information, such as WorkSafeBC data for the past 1 to 3 years, to support the judging process. Companies that have experienced a serious injury or fatality in the past two years may be excluded from consideration at the judges’ discretion.

Nominations: Any member or OSSE-certified company may nominate an individual for this award. 

Judging: Winner is selected based on the award criteria by a committee nominated by the Alliance.

Award: Winner and finalists will be announced at the Safety Pinnacle Awards Gala in June 2023. Winner will be awarded a crystal trophy and interviewed and recognized in an Alliance publication. Winner may also be engaged to participate in media and promotional opportunities to highlight their commitment (and their organization’s commitment) to health and safety.
