Joint Health and Safety Committee

JHSC resources and training | A Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) is legally required for every workplace that has 20+ full time–equivalent employees. Your committee must include employer and worker representatives, who come together to identify workplace health and safety issues and propose solutions.

The joint committee plays a critical role in your occupational health and safety management program. It provides a way for employers and workers to work together to identify workplace hazards and find solutions. Joint Health and Safety Committees can:

  • Identify unhealthy or unsafe situations and advise on potential solutions
  • Consider complaints related to health and safety
  • Consult with the workers and the employer on occupational health and safety (OHS) matters
  • Make recommendations for improvements to health and safety
  • Advise the employer on changes to equipment, environment, or processes that may impact the health and safety of workers
  • Participate in inspections and investigations
