Town Hall | Tomorrow’s Industry Today: Technology, Skills Training, and Safety
Technology investments in digitization, automation, robotics, and AI are driving a sea change for industry. They are reshaping production facilities. Eliminating hazardous jobs. Changing hiring and training requirements. And these changes are creating increasing demand for new skills, retraining, and risk assessments.
In the manufacturing and food processing sector, leading employers are addressing the hiring crisis in part through investments in automation and AI solutions to improve throughput while eliminating many health and safety risks for workers. But for many in the sector, major technology upgrades remain out of reach.
British Columbia’s 2023 budget earmarked $480 million in new provincial funding to help build a workforce prepared to meet the demands of the future through skills training, and labour market solutions. And an expanded $90 million in provincial grants program for manufacturing provides a new route for small to medium-sized companies to pursue technology upgrades for safe and sustainable operation.
